Adventure Travel World Summit 2017
Peru Ecocamp was thrilled to attend the Adventure Travel World Summit for the first time this year. Our Founder and CEO Raul Montes took the trip to Salta to represent the company. Raul was happy to join the summit and meet up with old friends from the business as well as make many new friends.
Raul partook in the Day of Adventure organised by ATTA and explored the stunning Salta countryside on horseback. The authentic gaucho adventure was a great way to experience a piece of the traditional life of this northern region of Argentina.
The group explored the breathtaking environment which surrounds Salta before ending the day with a classic Argentinian barbeque.
Back at the summit, Raul met up with old friends Alfredo Ferreyros from Explore Andes, Enrique Umber from Mountain Lodges of Peru, Pepe Lopez of Apumayo Expediciones and Nick Dall, who hiked the Qhapaq Ñan from Quito to Cusco. There were many social events and great chances to meet with fascinating people from every corner of the globe.
The summit was incredibly educational, with speeches from the experts of the adventure travel industry. The exciting events included workshops on travel marketing, innovotive speeches on conservation and wonderful meals hosted by nations from around the world.
The opening speech got the summit off to the best start with ATTA President Luis Vargas declaring that "This year's theme - Unite. Protect. Lead. - is more than words. It is a call to action."
It was the following speech from the explorer Robert Swan that certainly had the most profound effect on the 800 delegates in attendance. Swan, who was the first person to complete successful expeditions to both the North and South Poles, opened with the incredibly powerful words: “The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it”, which set the tone for the remainder of the summit.
This theme rang strong throughout the summit and the importance of sustainable travel was expressed time and again with James Thornton, the CE at Intrepid Travel reaffirming that "The onus is on all of us here today to make sustainable travel more mainstream".
Thank you so much to ATTA for making it happen and thank you also for the many great people who gave us the chance to present our new project. We hope to see you all again next year!
